Shearwaters Awards Explained
Awards recognise people who contribute to the branch and as such Shearwaters gives awards annually at the October social to those members who have made a difference through their participation.
All awards are held by the recipient for the year, and at the following October Awards night they are given a ‘Keepsake’ Trophy recognising the Award.
Hall of Fame:
This is a nominated award given to a member (or couple) who has (have) contributed to the Branch above and beyond on a consistent basis over an extended time (as defined by committee).
Geoff Barton Memorial Award:
This award is awarded to the Shearwaters member who is most active on rides during the year. Points are awarded based on the explanation below, and the member with the most points accrued during the year (1st September to 31st August) is awarded the trophy. It must be a rider.
Rear Guard Award:
The pillion with the most points is awarded this trophy.
Mega-Saur-Us Award:
This award is given to the rider who attends the most rides during the year. The winner of the Geoff Barton Memorial Award is ineligible to win the Mega-Saur-Us Award
Points System:
All Shearwaters Members (Riders and Pillions) receive 1 point each for attending a published Branch ride (irrespective of whether it is a single or multi day ride). They must be riding a motorcycle or Trike (2 or 3 wheeled) and not in a Motorvehicle (4 wheeled).
A Ride Leader is awarded 5 points total for leading a Day ride, or 10 points total for leading a Multi-day ride (irrespective of the total duration of the away ride).
It is only the Ride Leader that receives the higher point total for multi day rides.
Tail End Charlie is awarded 3 points total. For multi day rides, the points are awarded to the nominated Tail End Charlie for the first day only if Tail End Charlie swaps.
Mutton Bird Award:
This award is voted by committee and is considered our highest award.
Each Committee member attending the Committee meeting each month awards a vote to a Shearwaters member (much like Brownlow voting) they consider has contributed to the Branch above and beyond in the preceding month.
This is a clubman award to recognise members who contribute to the success of the branch. Committee members are not eligible for this award.
The Butterfly Award:
This award was donated by Leda Sant as an encouragement award to the Female Rider (not pillion) most deserving. This award may also be used to recognise an outstanding achievement by a Female Rider (not pillion). It is decided by Committee and need not be awarded in any particular year, but can be awarded to a recipient on more than one occasion.
Ride Leader of the year:
Every ride leader through the year has their name put in a raffle and the winner receives a Shearwaters Orange polo shirt with their name and 'Ride leader of the year 20XX' until 2022 when the award became a Shearwaters mug with their name and 'Ride leader of the year 20XX'
They only get their name put in the barrel once irrespective of how many rides they have led through the year, so every ride leader for the year has an equal chance.
Fun Monthly Awards:
Training Wheels Award:
This is a monthly award and is given to the rider who needs recognition and encouragement in the event they fail to keep their bike upright. This award is always given in the spirit of fun.
The Pockets Award:
This is a monthly award and is given to the rider who has lost their bike keys while on a club event or weekend ride.
