Queen’s Birthday Weekend Trip to Portland Friday June 10 to Monday June 14
Remember what goes on the ride stays on the ride…. Well there are some thing that can be reported on though so here goes …..
Friday morning, we all met at Maccas Berwick for an 8.30AM departure, the weather looked ok and we could see some blue skies in the west, it was cold but it all looked promising. After the usual briefing we mounted up and got going. Well, the optimism didn’t last long…… as soon as we left the heavy drizzle started and stayed with us pretty well all morning.
Cold and light rain is not great riding weather, but we made King Lake West at the Flying Tarts Bakery for hot coffee and some nourishment.
The rain continued, next stop was Daylesford for lunch, now that is a busy spot, especially for the long weekend but we did manage to find a good bakery. After lunch we headed towards Ballarat with Leda and Janice in tow in the warm car. The road works in Ballarat were in full swing. Had to do a U turn to get to our selected road and Pres was quick to point one finger meaning “this is the first U turn”.. As you may know, and it is not written anywhere but a compulsory U turn and maybe a bit of dirt make a good ride……well it’s something to talk about anyway. Getting back to the U turn in Ballarat it did not count as the road works barricaded our right hand turn into the desired road.
We are now heading west towards our destination, but you know it’s the journey that makes it memorable right? Well, the plan was to head towards Woolsthorpe and the onto Portland, but I took the wrong turn and quickly realized that it was the wrong way. Wow now I have done a U turn that counts ….. continued down the road looking for the Woolsthorpe turn off, the sign was very small and wham it went by so quick and that I missed it the turn. Well, there was no way I was going to make another U turn that would have been talked about for a long time. So, the directional committee made a quick executive decision to stay on the main road to Warnambool where we had a good chance to find fuel and a quick leg stretch. The skies are now turning very dark… no not the weather just nightfall. Hmmm…. wet roads, its dark, oncoming headlights, Kangas just waiting to jump out it all made for a long trip to Portland. We finally made our destination at 6.20 pm, dinner reservation was for 6.30 so no time for a full make over just a quick change.
Des and Cheryl joined us for a great Chinese meal and a fun evening was had by all after a long day in the saddle. Early bedtime as everyone is a bit tired.
